Gardens closing at 2pm (last entry 12:45) on 22nd, 29th Nov & 6th Dec (click Book Tickets for December & January early closing dates)
Thanks to the unique microclimate, and hundreds of years of careful curation, the Gardens have a huge variety of areas ready to discover. From the Jungle Ride to the Sino-Himalayan Glade, the Australasian Garden to the Monocot Border, and the Fernery to the Secret Walk, let our map guide you around the gardens.
Alongside an incredible array of plants and wildlife, the Gardens have a range of can’t-miss locations across the site. Don’t miss the Victorian Garden, stroll up to the Viewpoint, see if you can spot the vista of St Catherine’s Chapel, discover the red bridges, and marvel at the Oak Pavilion.
The Gardens demonstrate a level of diversity rivalling that of nature reserves. The large diversity of habitats, microclimates, food sources and nesting sites makes the Gardens perfect for native species and some non-native ones too.
The gardens are home to one of Britain’s rarest mammals, the hazel dormouse, and wall lizards that are usually native to areas of the Mediterranean. Golden and Lady Amhurst Pheasants, originally from the Orient roam free, and two species of stick insects can be seen with a bit of luck. Over 600 species of moth have been recorded at the site since 1765.
The climate is the sum of a number of aspects that have been tweaked and changed over the Gardens history, to best grow plants from countries and climates very different to our own.
Less than a mile from the sea, the Gardens have their extremes regulated by the energy of the gulf stream. It is protected from cold, northerly winds by the limestone formation that overshadows Abbotsbury from its northerly side. The Gardens use the hills to the west and east to block the prevailing wind from the southwest, and the coldest winds from the east. Windbreaks have been established on all borders of the Gardens to block, break or redirect cold wind.
The stunning Café building beautifully complements the subtropical theme and atmosphere of the Gardens. Providing a range of food and drinks for visitors either inside, on the veranda or in the courtyard, where you are immersed in the subtropical planting.
The Plant Centre gives you an opportunity to take home a little piece of Abbotsbury. With outstanding varieties of plants that have been tried and tested over decades by the Gardens.
The Gift Shop features beautiful gifts and decorations with a seasonal feel. House plants and home interiors décor, plus souvenirs or treats to take home.
